I wonder why Mrs. Hirsch left her shop? I wonder that because when Kirsti's button broke Mrs. Hirsch was not there. I love this book!

The story begins when Ellen and Annemarie are racing to the corner. Then a soldier was at the corner and asked Annemarie questions.

kittycat6,
Who is that soldier - why do you think he stopped them? Were the girls afraid? How could you tell?

I think Mrs. Hirsch went into hiding because she might be jewish and the solders might be after her.

I think the soldier stops them because he was cuious. I think that because when I was pictureing the story image in my head it was a young man. That's why he stop them I think. The soldier asked questions one of them was "what is your name".

kittycat15,
I am glad you love the book so far! It really is a story of true friendship.

kittycat100, i really do think its is a book about freindship. I wouldn't have the guts to do what Annemarie and Ellen does. But it is getting really sad because Ellen and her mom and dad moved to Swedan so they won't get arrested.
